Episode 08 - Crofty (Formula 1)
Welcome to episode 08 of the Wonder Junkie Podcast featuring F1 Sky Sports commentator David Croft aka… Crofty!
What a pleasure it was to speak to Crofty and a thank you as well to Dewsbury for helping to set it up. So it turns out that commentating on the F1 is a very busy and demanding job. The day after me and Crofty spoke he had to fly to Monaco (just for the day), then a few days later fly off to Singapore for the Grand Prix, so a thank you again to Crofty for taking an hour of his time to have a chat for the Wonder Junkie Podcast.
In the chat we spoke about how he initially climbed the ranks of the BBC and 5live to get where he is today, his love of radio and broadcasters such as Roger Scott, Tommy Vance, and Bob Harris. We also touched upon rock music with his love of Bruce Springsteen, attending Donington Monsters Of Rock in 1988, doing the Newport Helicopter at a Skindred show and why he isn’t excited by the Guns N’ Roses reunion.
What I got from Crofty as the chat went on was his genuine enthusiasm for the work he does and the music he loves. Whilst all of this may sound like a fairy tale it comes with a price tag of being away from your family 21 weeks of the year which undoubtedly must take its toll but he seemed to take it all in good stride. He had some great stories about the places he’s travelled in the world from doing a conga line in Singapore to whale watching in Australia and diving in the Maldives, his journey has definitely taken him to some pretty awesome places in the world.
With the recent announcement of the ownership takeover of Formula One, which saw US firm Liberty Media buying Formula 1 for $4.4bn (£3.3bn) from Bernie Ecclestone. I asked for his take on it and he was very optimistic about the deal and thinks that further investment could really help grow the sport in the years to come.
Crofty tweets from https://twitter.com/CroftyF1 and has a great hashtag of #askcrofty which usually trends, so if there’s something else you’d like to ask I’d recommend getting involved with that. I really felt like we could’ve talked for two hours if we had the time, so I hope I get to chat with him again down the line as it felt like we only just scratched the surface, but as Crofty would say it’s “Lights Out And Away We Go For one More Time”
